Southwest Quilt and Fiber Art Show

Southwest Quilt & Fiber Art Festival

Next week is the quilt people and the fiber art people are coming together in St. George, Utah after a long hiatus to put on a really nice show called The Southwest Quilt &Fiber Art Festival.  Creators from as far as Las Vegas and local as St. George will be showing their gorgeous creations on Friday, May 22 and Saturday May 23.  There will be a terrific class and talks on offer. The class is a really unique and intense classes which I have taken an abbreviated version of with these ladies.  It was so fun and unique!  Sue Gilgen and Cheryl Styler will be teaching a contemporary painting and batiking class.  I just looked it up - It's sold out.  I understand why. Its a three day class where you will learn how to batik and dye around it.  I took an abbreviated form of this class.  It was probably the most fun class I have ever taken because it was interesting, challenging, new and you come away with beautiful things and new skills. If it is offered during the next SW Quilt and Fiber Art Festival, be sure to snag a spot early.

Here is a what I walked away with (I was a dead beginner in every aspect of the process)

The women teaching the class are terrific.  I see they are going to be doing a talk about their quilting journey.  That should be interesting.  So many beautiful and varied works of art.  Award winning art.  I will be attending that talk.

Cathie Purdy will also be giving a talk on how she tells a story through fiber art.  She is a fabulous artist and gifted long arm quilter. That should be an interesting talk.  I will be at that one for sure.  She is a featured artist at the festival.  I am sure her pieces she is showing will have a story to tell! I will be sure to get pictures.

I am showing a quilt on the on the quilt side of things and will be showing several pieces of fiber art.  I will include pictures of them with the other pictures I take from the festival.

I am also making a skirt to wear to the festival.  We'll see how it turns out. I am not using a pattern and I don't know how to make clothes, but I have a semi can do attitude and a friend who is willing (with great reservation) to help me.  She knows me.  Haha.  I went to her house the other day for help with the skirt.  She spent the better part of the time trying to convince me to put a liner in it.  I balked and kicked like a mule. But then she basically said "Even you, a big dummy, can put a liner in a skirt."  And then she tried to show me how to sew the waistband and recorded a video showing me so I could refer to it while sewing said waistband and I swear I saw doubt in her eye that the skirt with or without the liner could be made by me. *update: I ignored her instructions and did it my way which is not a way but more of a wing it. SO NOW I am going to get it done and will be wearing it even if it is unsightly.  My husband was like "why didn't you just sew a patch of fabric pieces over jeans or something?"  Apparently he doesn't know the great lengths I will go to in order to humiliate myself in front of crowds carrying camera phones. OK, he does know that, but is disdainful of the impracticalities of my weird flourishes.

I will be at the fiber art area of the festival for some of the festival.  If you happen to read this, come on down and have a look and be sure to stop by the booth.  I am the lady with the long brown hair.  Oh and the lady with the weird skirt (if I can make it work).

OK bye.
