Southwest Quilt and Fiber Art Show 2026 was...
A HIT!
Where to begin?
I should start with Bob (who made it happen), but no. I am going to start with my skirt. I mentioned this in my last post. Sue forced me to put a lining in it and I wore it. It was not terrific, but I think I was the only one who wore a scrap skirt so...
Thank you Sue Swinyard for being a merciful and patient teacher to your willful friend.
OK down to business.
I think the fact that Bob Purcell decided sort of at the last minute to host the show in St. George, UT (it had been years since the quilt show had happened and it didn't look like there would be one in 2026) and that it was such an amazing, fun, original show that went off really well (Thank you Laura Arnold who ran that beast) should be noted and a giant THANK YOU!! to him and YLI Threads. The man was supposed to be retired!
I took a few pictures of the show. Mostly fiber art because that was where I was working and I apparently don't have legs to walk... Sigh. I am no photographer.
Let's start with the ribbon winning ladies from Southern Utah Fiber Artists (SUFA) on the quilt side of the festival:
This is "Oriental Inspiration" by Linda Mihalik (a member of SUFA). She received a Second Place ribbon. This was the SUFA fabric challenge wall. Those members who chose to be in the challenge took a piece of the left most fabric (on the wall) and incorporated it into a fiber art piece. The man in the frame is "A life Well Lived" by Sue Swinyard. It is made from cheesecloth. It is fabulous. It is just cheesecloth and Sue. Zoom in for a look at it. Woo!
The collage quilt on top is Margaret Abramshe's "Be Present". Try to zoom in on that one. Lots to see! (she is a member of SUFA) And on bottom is Rachel Pfunder's "Timeless Sunset" She is not a member of SUFA, but we hope she will enter more fiber art in the festival (Nov 2027). I think she teaches how to do her improv style quilting. Drop a comment if you want info on that. I think,I can hook ya up!Here we have a few maker's items. The head ("Collateral Damage")and the felted kaiki jacket are mine. Sue Swinyard did the felted jean jacket. There are three felted animals there in the center a maned wolf, a raven and a brown bear made by Debbie Hussey. We three are members of SUFA. Debbie teaches 3d felted animal makin classes. Leave me a note in the comments and I will hook you up if you want to take a class). The two pieces on the wall: Paulette Schermerhorn's "Peace in the Desert" and Janey Argyle's "Moonrise on Zion".OK. I am a lazy blogger and the picture is not awesome. Some a quick rundown of the next two pics: There are three felted pieces on the wall done by me. A couple pieces I cant identify. The Red in the center is a loomed weaving by Sandra Sandberg (of SUFA) then the one to the left is an abstract by Sylvia Lewis (of SUFA) (she also did the pretty shawls on the far left table) and next to the abstract is "The Reader" by Margaret Abramshe. Far right wall two animals were done by Ann Nancarrow. On the right table are necklaces done by Brenda Wey (Of SUFA) (they were gorgeous) and gloves knitted by Brenda Wey. There were also some scrap books made by hand and some woven tribal ladies going to market by Sandra SandbergOn the wall: Alejandro the llama by Linda Wells, A flower study by Ann Nancarrow, "Reverie" by Paulette Schermerhorn then swing onto the next wall is a Hardanger bell pull by Kristina Sealander (she may be a new member of SUFA I saw her when I slipped into the June meeting for a second) and "Cheri" by Sherri Gee (a member of SUFA). On the tables: Three fabric mosaics done by me, Shan the Creative (A member of SUFA), two hardanger dolls by Kristina Sealander, "Ice Angel" (framed) by Brenda Wey, I think the next two are bargello pieces by Krstina Sealander, yarn made by Sylvia Lewis and a self portrait by Janey Argyl. I, my friends, have just passed the fiber arts test for alzheimers. Sheesh! Hope I got everyone's pieces and names right. Now onto the other photos I took of the quilt side of the festival:
My Collage quilt "Octopus's Garden". Didn't see it? Shocker. It was cloistered with Pink in the back corner. At least I was hanging with someone awesome!
The rest of these are Marilyn Badger's quilts. Yes. I am a fan. They are the only other pictures I took except of Sue Gilgen's (but she does not want them published - people steal the image and make quilts with digitized pictures of the quilts. No lie. Thieves).
Anyway, my pictures do not do her work justice. I was really just capturing parts of the quilts because something about the part intrigued me.
